The Variables tab in the container layer settings lists and manages environment variables for the layer. Variables are exposed inside the container at runtime — your application reads them the same way it would on any Linux host.
If the container is linked to other containers in the same environment, those containers’ variables appear in the same tab with a prefix that identifies the source. Variables on linked containers can be edited inline, and changes propagate to both source and target containers.
Adding a variable
- Click Add.
- Fill in the Name and Value cells. Names must contain only Latin letters, digits, and underscores (
_). - Save the variable.
The new variable is available to the container the next time it starts.
Editing and removing variables
- Edit — change a variable’s value. Double-clicking a row switches it straight into edit mode.
- Remove — delete a variable. Hold Shift or Ctrl to multi-select rows for bulk removal.
A small set of default variables is locked and can’t be removed — these are the ones the platform needs for stack-specific behavior.
Applying changes
After editing variables in the layer settings frame, click Apply to commit. If you’re inside the Topology Wizard for an existing environment, click Apply again at the wizard level to push the topology change through to the running container.
Most stacks pick up new variables on the next container restart. Some stacks support live reload — check the stack’s specific docs if you need the variable to take effect without downtime.
