Manage environment groups

Assign environments to groups, add subgroups, edit, and remove groups in the Stack Harbor PaaS dashboard.

Once you have created an environment group, you operate on it from two places in the dashboard: the inline Tags column for ad-hoc edits per environment, and the Env Groups > Manage view for tree-wide changes. This page walks through the four common operations.

Assign a group to an environment

To tag an existing environment, hover over its Tags column and click the button that appears:

  • Add to Env Group — when the environment has no tags yet.
  • Edit Env Groups — when at least one tag is already attached.

In the dialog you can:

  • Pick from existing groups using the auto-populated list.
  • Type a new name and press Enter to create and attach a new tag in one step.
  • Detach tags that no longer apply.
  • Use / inside the input to create or pick a nested path (for example project-x/dev).

Click Apply. The tags appear in the Tags column immediately.

Shared environments cannot be added to your personal groups — only the owner can tag them.

Tip: When you create a new environment from inside a selected group (the group breadcrumb is active at the top), the new environment is tagged with that group automatically.

Add a subgroup

Subgroups divide a top-level group into finer partitions — typical use is splitting a project group into dev, staging, and prod, or separating compute and data tiers within a single project.

Subgroups show in the Tags column with / as a separator, for example project-x/dev.

Three ways to create a subgroup:

  • During group creation — type the full path in the Name field (parent/child), or pick a value in the Parent Group dropdown.
  • From inside a group — open the action menu on the group breadcrumb at the top and click Add Child.
  • From the management view — open Env Groups > Manage, select a row, and pick Add > Add Child.

In the latter two cases the Add Group dialog opens with the parent already set.

Nesting has no depth limit — but past two or three levels, filters become harder to reason about. Keep the tree shallow if you can.

Edit a group

Two entry points:

  • Switch to the group, open the action menu on its breadcrumb, and click Edit.
  • Open Env Groups > Manage, select the row, and click Edit in the toolbar.

The Edit Group dialog opens with everything you set at creation time:

  • Name — rename the group. The colour swatch is editable too.
  • Parent Group — re-nest the group under a different parent, or detach it to the top level.
  • Environments — add or remove environments from the group.

Click Apply to save. If you edited from the Environment Groups management view, click Refresh to see the updated tree.

Remove a group

Two ways:

  • Navigate into the group, open its action menu, and click Remove.
  • Or open Env Groups > Manage, select the row, and click Remove.

Confirm in the pop-up.

Removing a group has no effect on the environments it contained — they keep running, only the tag is detached. Removing every environment from a group does not delete the group; the tag stays available for re-use.
